Mariann Metsis

Mariann Metsis is a London-based painter. Her work weaves together layers of color, texture, figure, and abstraction. On Metsis’ canvases, different painting styles coexist: some images emerge immediately, while others linger subtly within the hues. Her compositions capture moments suspended between the familiar and the uncanny, with subjects that seem to perform for the canvas itself. Metsis’ landscapes occupy a space between reality and imagination, exploring the interplay of memory, perception, and the passage of time. Through her practice, she considers how the past persists in the present, revealing the nonlinear rhythms of history in the subtle shifts and pentimenti of her painting.

Mariann Metsis (b. 1991, Tallinn) studied at Central Saint Martin College of Art & Design, London; The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna; and obtained a BA in Fine Arts from the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. Solo exhibitions include Trauerspiele, Margot Samel, New York, US; Bals des victimes, Deborah Schamoni, Munich, Germany; Life under, Galerina, London, UK;  maalid2020, Hoib Gallery, Tallinn, Estonia. Her work has been included in group exhibitions such as The Apartment, Galerina, London, UK; Shifting Sand, Galerija Asni, Riga, Latvia; bending spines, curated by Antoine Simeao Schalk, Berlin, Germany; High Stakes, Lisa Boudet, Paris, France; just as when the night, Light Eye Mind, London, UK; Paintings for the Temple of Love, Cob Gallery, London, UK; and Cities Methodologies, Slade Research Centre, London, UK. Her writing has been published in Manhole Journal.
